Six Must-have Summer Cigars

We’re in the middle of the lovely summer season, and there’s never been a better time to kick back and enjoy the evenings with good friends and a cigar. But what makes a good summer cigar? According to Eric Risberg of the Associated Press, you should look for high-quality construction and tobacco, as well as a producer who consistently makes good cigars. Here at BLEND, we believe that smoking a cigar should be an unforgettable experience every time, which is why we offer the finest cigars all year round. In this blog post, we’ll share six cigars that you have to try before summer’s over.

Joya De Nicaragua JOYA RED Robusto

Joya is the oldest cigar maker in Nicaragua, and this experience shines through with the Joya Red. This mild cigar is easy for novices to smoke, but seasoned aficionados will enjoy it as well. The Joya Red has a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, and its filler is a mixture of leaves from the Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa regions in Nicaragua. You’ll taste hints of leather, toast, cocoa, pepper, fruity undertones, cedar spice, and roasted nuts with every draw. Joya Red is full-bodied and complex, yet not overpowering–perfect for a summer evening with family, friends, and a glass of bourbon.

Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Sixty

This Honduran cigar has the quality and flavor that’s idea for summertime: good construction and a light taste that helps you enjoy it anytime–even on an empty stomach. This mellowness is thanks to the Vintage 1999 Sixty’s filler: leaves from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic that have been aged seven years. You’ll find hints of cream, butter, toast, and nuts in your cigar, along with peppery undertones. The Vintage 1999 Sixty pairs well with a mojito, just one of many classic summer drinks that you can find at BLEND.

Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuradosmoking-whiskey

This Ecuadorian cigar has roots in Cuba, Honduras, and Nicaragua–Melanio Oliva started producing his cigars in Cuba during the 1880s. Since then, Oliva has become known for its bold, strong stogies and complexity from start to finish. The Melanio has a unique curved head and foot, along with sharply pressed corners and a Nicaraguan ligero long filler leaf inside the cigar. Full-bodied and smooth, the Melanio delivers hints of coffee, cedar, caramel, citrus, and even leather. Pair your Melanio with a large summer meal and whiskey, where you can properly take your time with this exquisite cigar.

Tatuaje Havana VI Verocu No. 5

Crafted in Nicaragua, Tatuaje is very similar to Cuban cigar, especially in its design. The Tatuaje has an almost veinless Habano wrapper, triple cap, and no band. This cigar is medium-bodied and relatively small, but its varying, rich flavors add in interesting twist. Hints of pepper, fruit, spice, cocoa, and hay give way to a floral taste as you continue to smoke the Tatuaje, finishing with more hints of spice. You can smoke the Tatuaje in about 45 minutes: just the right amount of time for closing the deal with a client over a drink at BLEND.

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especialcigar and wine

The Epicure Especial–with wrapper, binder, and filler from Cuba–is a relatively new cigar in the Hoyo de Monterrey line. This cigar has rich, complex flavors and is full-bodied without being harsh, so the Epicure Especial is great to start out with if you’re new to Cuban cigars. You’ll catch a whiff of earthy scents and taste hints of coffee, herbs, cocoa, and even graham crackers when smoking this classic Cuban. Pair the Epicure Especial with Cuban rum or light red wine; it lasts an hour or more, giving you time to catch up with family and friends during your smoke.

Davidoff Oro Blanco

At BLEND, we love Davidoff cigars, so we are thrilled to recommend the Davidoff Oro Blanco as a perfect summer cigar. Crafted in the Dominican Republic–wrapper, binder, and filler–the Oro Blanco is the producer’s first vintage cigar. Creator Eladio Diaz was inspired to create this cigar after watching the sun set in Mao, in the Dominican Republic. He wanted to share the “beautiful moment I experienced…a moment so rare.” The wrapper is well rolled and uniform in color, and the Oro Blanco offers aromas of leather, pepper, cedar, and vintage tobacco. You’ll taste hints of paprika, mustard, salt, lavender, and coriander, followed by butterscotch, walnut, oak, and blood orange. Pair the Oro Blanco with a rare bourbon for a special occasion or just a casual summer night.

Be sure to try these six cigars when you’re unwinding this summer; you deserve it. Here at BLEND, you can find quality cigars from Davidoff and other renowned makers. Our cigars pair well with the drink suggestions we mentioned above, but feel free to explore our options and find your new favorite combination; our staff will happily offer recommendations. We hope to see you this summer.
